National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Returns April 29, 2017

THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (April 11, 2017) – Residents are encouraged to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day drop-off location at The Woodlands Township Town Hall front parking lot, 2801 Technology Forest Boulevard, 77381. The event is hosted by The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Watch. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will collect the medications for safe disposal by the DEA.

The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps at this event, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous. Medications may not be dropped off before or after the event. It’s a great time to get rid of medications that are no longer needed. In case of inclement weather, the special agents and deputy will be stationed at the front lobby.

The DEA reports this event will give the public a chance to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
