THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (January 15, 2016) – For the 40th year, The Woodlands celebrates Arbor Day in keeping with the vision of the community.
The Arbor Day celebration will take place at Rob Fleming Park in the Village of Creekside Park on Saturday, January 23, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition to the Township, sponsors of the event include The Woodlands Development Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Howard Hughes Corporation®; Repsol and The Brickman Group, Ltd.
The Woodlands is a dynamic hometown within a natural forest, known for its balance between man and nature, according to Township Chairman Dr. Ed Robb.
Dr. Robb noted The Woodlands Township’s commitment to the forest through its Vision 2034 Strategic Plan which states “support reforestation and forest management planning.”
Since 1977, over 1.32 million tree seedlings have been given away at the Arbor Day celebration. For the fourth year, The Woodlands Township will donate an additional 91,000 tree seedlings to be distributed at the event to enhance the forested setting of The Woodlands. This brings the total number of tree seedlings to be handed out this year to 121,000.
“The Woodlands Township is proud to take an active role the popular tradition of Arbor Day,” Dr. Robb said. “The trees given away help long-lasting efforts to add thousands of trees in residential yards, roadways, commercial properties, parks and open spaces. The trees highlight the natural beauty of The Woodlands.”
Seven different varieties of free tree seedlings will be available, continuing a 40-year tradition. The selection of trees includes Bald Cypress, Eastern Redbud, Loblolly Pine, Nuttall Oak, Overcup Oak, River Birch and Water Oak. In addition to receiving free tree seedlings, guests may register at the event to win one of five, seven-gallon native trees. The drawings will take place hourly. Winners must be present.
“We are excited to once again continue the tradition of distributing free tree seedlings to enhance the forested community in The Woodlands,” said Tim Welbes, Co-President of The Woodlands Development Company. “We are grateful to all of the sponsors who make this a wonderful event for our hometown. We invite residents of the community and guests to come out and enjoy the Arbor Day festivities and receive new tree seedlings.”
Residents are encouraged to collect their free tree seedlings at the Arbor Day celebration and plant them on their property, in community open space reserves and in forest preserves.
